Experimental investigations of licensing environments for NPIs in English
نویسندگان
چکیده
In an experimental investigation of NPIs and their licensing conditions in German, Richter & Radó (2013) showed that Weak Licensors can partially license Strong NPIs. In two experiments we investigate these results for English. In Experiment 1 we empirically identify 16 Strong and 16 Weak NPIs by examining their acceptability when licensed by sentential negation and weak adverb licensors and find results similar to German. In Experiment 2 we compare the licensing abilities of two different types of conditionals, normal, causal conditionals and rhetorical conditionals, such as `If you win, I’ll eat my hat’. We did not find statistically significant evidence for our prediction that rhetorical conditionals might be able to license strong NPIs better than normal conditionals, but we discuss possible changes in the experimental design that might lead to different results. Experiment 2 thus serves as a pilot study for future investigations.

Licensing strong NPIs
This paper investigates the differences in distribution between weak and strong NPIs in English. It is proposed that both weak and strong NPIs are licensed by Downward Entailing (DE) operators; but that weak NPIs only pay attention to the truth-conditional content of their licensers, while strong NPIs must pay attention to nontruthconditional meaning as well in their search for a DE licenser. T...
متن کاملBraucht niemanden zu scheren: A Survey of NPI Licensing in German
In this contribution we will argue that negative polarity is a collocational phenomenon that does not follow from other properties of the respective lexical elements. With German data as evidence, we will follow a proposal by van der Wouden and treat Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) as collocates which must be licensed by abstract semantic properties of their contexts. Using a collocation module ...
متن کاملSurface structure constraints on negative polarity and word order in Hindi and Englishy
Hindi negative polarity items (NPIs), unlike English NPIs, can occur in subject position, outside the scope of negation at s-structure. I present an analysis for this phenomenon set in categorial grammar, where licensing occurs at s-structure in both English and Hindi. This treatment has the following advantages: it is monostratal and strictly lexical; NPI licensing is driven by monotonicity ma...
متن کاملParametric Variation in NPI-Licensing and the Role of LF X-Movement Overview: Cross-linguistic differences in licensing conditions on Negative Polarity Items
Overview: Cross-linguistic differences in licensing conditions on Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) have been observed. [Difference A] Long-distance licensing of NPIs is possible in English unless an island intervenes ([1]: (1)), while Korean/Japanese (K/J) NPIs require a clause-mate Neg ([2]: (2)). [Difference B] K/J allow subject NPIs, while English does not ((3)). Although previous studies of K...
متن کاملBraucht niemanden zu scheren: NPI Licensing in German
NPIs have been studied intensely in several linguistic frameworks since Klima (1964). Since they may occur both in the scope of negation as well as in a variety of other semantically or pragmatically related environments (such as interrogatives, antecedents of conditionals, modifiers of superlative and universal NPs, complements of adversative predicates, to name a few), one very active and con...
